The\u00a0death\u00a0was\u00a0verified\u00a0in\u00a0a\u00a0statement\u00a0that\u00a0was\u00a0written\u00a0by\u00a0the\u00a0band’s\u00a0publicist\u00a0and\u00a0uploaded\u00a0to\u00a0social\u00a0media\u00a0late\u00a0on\u00a0Friday. Mr.\u00a0Hawkins\u00a0had\u00a0been\u00a0residing\u00a0at\u00a0a\u00a0hotel\u00a0in\u00a0northern\u00a0Bogot\u00e1,\u00a0where\u00a0the\u00a0band\u00a0was\u00a0slated\u00a0to\u00a0perform\u00a0Friday\u00a0night,\u00a0according\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0attorney\u00a0general’s\u00a0office\u00a0of\u00a0Colombia. Preliminary\u00a0testing,\u00a0according\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0office,\u00a0revealed\u00a0that\u00a0Mr.\u00a0Hawkins\u00a0had\u00a0a\u00a0number\u00a0of\u00a0drugs\u00a0in\u00a0his\u00a0system,\u00a0including\u00a0opiates,\u00a0marijuana,\u00a0and\u00a0benzodiazepines;\u00a0the\u00a0cause\u00a0of\u00a0death\u00a0was\u00a0still\u00a0being\u00a0looked\u00a0into.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On recent Foo Fighters tours, Mr. Hawkins would take Mr. Grohl’s place to sing a version of “Under Pressure,” a Queen song from 1981 that featured David Bowie, or “Somebody to Love,” coming out from behind the drum kit to give respect to the band that helped him get where he is today. Additionally, he would take center stage for drum solos that lasted several minutes, grinning as he spun around on his riser, crashing cymbals and banging timpani.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Despite being described to as “a sideman with a frontman’s flair,” Mr. Hawkins has acknowledged in the past that he occasionally had second thoughts about taking Mr. Grohl’s place behind the drum kit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said to Spin in 2002: “I didn’t feel like I was good enough to be in this band, to play drums with Dave. That was the root of a lot of my insecurities, which led to a lot of my drug use.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He overdosed in London in 2001 and temporarily fell unconscious. Mr. Hawkins told Kerrang, “Everyone has their own path, and I took it too far,” adding that he had bought into the “myth of live hard and fast, die young.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As he continued, “I’m not here to preach about not doing drugs, because I loved doing drugs, but I just got out of control for a while, and it almost got me.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a 2018 interview with the internet radio station Beats 1, Mr. Hawkins remarked, “There’s no happy ending with hard drugs.” He would not, however, elaborate on how he managed to stay clean, saying, “I don’t really share how I conduct my life in that aspect. I use a system that is effective for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
