The summer kids series is a longstanding tradition of movie theaters to show movies made for children on summer mornings. It creates a few hours of escape for the parents/summer day camps and they get to entertain their kids for a short while. It comes wildly cheap and that is a main selling point.
How did I increase our attendance in my first year of running the program's marketing with a competitor a short distance away keeping their cost to the customer even cheaper? Strong strategy. I began a promotion with giveaways for kids and parents alike. Every ticket purchased was a name in a raffle.
The raffle was for dinner and a movie, so I sought out donated gift cards from neighboring restaurants, in exchange for movie passes to the managers (something of little value to my business). I had a full social media strategy, raising awareness and targeting potential parents.
I went door to door, made calls to every vacation bible school, Boys & Girls club, and other kids care facilities. Thinking operations through, I helped my supervisor implement an "order ahead" system for the large groups so I wouldn't have long lines of children waiting for popcorn, candy, and drink.
Speaking of candy, this was our first year ever with a $2 candy option. We stocked the small Cookie Dough Bites up and had a sales competition within the company on who could sell the most per capita. We placed 2nd only a few bags behind Valdosta. A town of similar size and no competing theaters.
The mission was an overall success as we brought in more guests than last year amidst the new competition. The sales were up so much in this event and others I took lead on (D&D Fan Event, Barb/enheimer, Mean Girls VIP Event) that it was one of the main reasons my supervisor won General Manager of the year company wide.
